Two men were arrested in the Crumlin area of south west Dublin today in connection with the shooting of a Garda sergeant.

The attack took place on the Monasterboice Road shortly after 7am.

The officer was hit in the chest and was taken to hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

It is understood the gunman was spotted by gardaí and a chase ensued before the officer was fired at.

Gardaí refused to comment on whether the incident is linked to a nearby gangland killing yesterday evening.

A car suspected to have been involved in the shooting was pursued to the Drimnagh area, where it crashed.

Two men fled from the car and attempted to hijack another vehicle but were arrested at the scene.

The pair are detained at Sundrive Road and Crumlin stations under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act.
