A murder investigation has been launched into the death of two children in London, police said tonight.

A 30-year-old woman was arrested at an address in Hackney, east London, where the three-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy were found this morning.

She remains in custody tonight. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said police were not looking for anyone else in connection with the murders.

The spokesman said officers were called to the house in Pembury Close at approximately 9.25am today after they received reports of the deaths of two children.

An ambulance crew also rushed to the address but the children were pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives from the Child Abuse Investigation Team are leading the investigation, the spokesman said.

Police believe they know the identity of the children but are waiting for formal identification and to inform next of kin before releasing their names.

Post-mortem examinations are to be arranged in due course.
