TD to contest seat after retirement rethink
A Fine Gael TD is to contest his seat in Galway West after reconsidering his decision to retire before next year’s General Election, it was confirmed today.
Padraic McCormack had announced last April he was not going to run for the seat he had held in Galway West since 1989.
However, the TD said he had decided he would not seek re-election next year in the belief Fine Gael Cllr Brian Walsh would replace him as the party’s candidate.
“I was happy that we had a strong team who would work on behalf of the people of West Galway. Unfortunately, for personal reasons the time is not right for Brian on this occasion.
“I know Cllr Walsh will not be lost to the Party. He was an outstanding mayor last year and he is continuing as a city councillor. He has pledged his support to the party in the election and as a young person he can have a bright future in the party,” Mr McCormack said.
“I made it clear at the time that I was not retiring from politics and that I would continue my work as a TD for the people of Galway as usual.
“Now that Brian has withdrawn his name, and after consulting with my family and the party organisation, I am pleased to say that I have informed the party leader that I am willing to contest the election.”
The TD said he had allowed the party time to explore options and see if other candidates were available to contest the election.
“I know this as a big decision but I am still enthusiastic about the job and I have the experience to know the commitment required from my 17 years as a TD,” he said.
“I feel I have a serious role to play in the election and I believe I have a contribution to make as a Dáil Deputy for Galway city and county.”
The TD, who was Mayor of Galway from 1992-1993, said he was looking forward to the election campaign.
