More than 15,000 people now avail of a mobile phone cash allowance from the Government.

The Telephone Allowance was extended in April last year to include mobiles for the first time.

It is worth over €300 a year, paid in monthly cash instalments.

Anyone over the age of 66 or those on social welfare payments like disability and the carers allowance can apply for the scheme.

Social and Family Affairs Minister Mary Hanafin has said people are finding it very helpful especially older people anxious to keep in touch with family and friends.
