Luke Chadwick admits he will have to quit Old Trafford if he cannot force his way into the Manchester United first-team picture this season.
The Cambridge-born wide-man looked to have a bright Red Devils future just 18 months ago when he was making regular appearances from the bench after making his debut as an 18-year-old against Aston Villa in 1998.
However, Chadwick started just five games last term and injury has frustrated his attempts to force his way into Alex Ferguson’s plans this season.
He did make one ineffective appearance from the bench in the defeat at Leeds but could not even manage a place among the substitutes for the 3-0 win over Everton on Monday.
It is even more frustrating for the 22-year-old, who has to watch his former youth team colleague John O’Shea establish himself as a first-team regular.
Chadwick is still hoping for a similar opportunity but, with the likes of Ryan Giggs and David Beckham to oust in his bid to gain a wide midfield berth, it looks a forlorn task.
And, although he realises he would be taking a step down if he does decide to leave the club, he realises it is time to be experiencing regular first-team action.
“I need to make an impression this season because I am 22 now and need first-team action,” he said.
“If I don’t make an impact I will have to look elsewhere.”
Chadwick has previously had a spell on loan with United’s Belgian feeder club Royal Antwerp and admits he would not turn his back on another loan deal, even though new transfer regulations mean he would have to step down into the Nationwide League.
But he is aware his career is reaching a crossroads, and one of the signs is pointing away from Old Trafford.
“If a loan deal came along that would be fine,” he said. “It would be good to get a regular game of football.
“As you get older, you can’t wait forever for your chance. You want to get amongst it and be part of the squad.
“There are so many great players here you know you cannot walk into the team but if I don’t make an impact this season I would have to consider leaving.”
