A teenage girl, who took part in a violent gang mugging of a young Chinese woman, has been remanded on bail pending sentence.
The 17-year-old pleaded guilty at the Children’s Court today to robbery of the woman who is in her early twenties, at Swords Road, in Santry, in Dublin, on June 13 last.
Judge Ann Ryan was told that the girl with five other youths “assaulted the Chinese national and robbed her iPod and €800 in cash.”
The court heard that the girl had no previous convictions and had not come to Garda attention since.
Defence counsel Grainne O’Neill said two others have been charged over the incident. The girl had learned a lesson and did not come into possession of the stolen money.
The teen’s mother outlined to the judge how her daughter began to get into trouble.
“Before then she was your typical teenager sometimes having tantrums, refusing to go to school coming home a bit later than she should.”
“The she started to hang around with a troublesome crowd.”
She said her daughter was now “devastated” at being involved in the incident. She has stopped associating with the other youths involved in the mugging and is now concentrating on her education, the mother said.
Judge Ryan remanded the girl on bail to appear again next month to allow time for a probation report to be obtained.
