Super Junior Minister Willie Penrose has today confirmed that he sought clarification from his leader before accepting the position in the new Cabinet.

The Longford Westmeath TD has been linked to the half-hour delay in the announcements by Taoiseach Enda Kenny in the Dáil yesterday.

Speaking on Shannonside FM this morning, Minister Penrose confirmed that he did not initially accept the offer from Eamon Gilmore until he was sure it was not just a token appointment.

"I sought clarification as to the nature and extent of the role of Super Junior," he said.

"There’s nothing worse than cosmetic, or, you know ... tokenism. I’m somebody that wanted to clarify that it’s a real job, and that you had an input at Cabinet."
