Soccer: Sheringham and Sinclair in England squad

Teddy Sheringham, Trevor Sinclair and Martin Keown are included in the England squad, for the World Cup qualifier against Greece on Saturday.

Sheringham will return to his old stamping ground of Old Trafford for a game England need to win to guarantee qualification for Japan and Korea next summer.

Keown has been brought in by Sven Goran Eriksson as defensive cover, along with Ugo Ehiogu of Middlesbrough. West Ham's Trevor Sinclair has also been called up.

Frank Lampard loses out in the wake of his ill-advised drinking spree the day after the terrorist atrocities in the United States.

On his first day in charge of England, Eriksson made clear his strong aversion to players, whether on international duty or not, stepping out of line or drinking to excess during the season.

Unless Nicky Butt is able to join the squad, despite initial indications that he would be ruled out for a couple of weeks, England would appear to be left extremely short of central midfield cover for Steven Gerrard.

Eriksson will therefore be hoping there are no further injury problems for him to worry about, having already lost not only Owen and Smith but also Sol Campbell and Wes Brown.

There is still another doubt over David Seaman's shoulder, but Rio Ferdinand was said to be fine, despite limping at the end of Leeds' game at Ipswich today.

Sheringham did score as a substitute against Mexico in May but a six-minute appearance off the bench in Albania has so far been his only involvement under Eriksson in a competitive international.

England are nevertheless relatively short of forward options in the absence of Owen and Smith, with Chris Sutton having been considered after Eriksson watched him in action for Celtic.

Sinclair, who ended a three-year international exile with his call-up by Kevin Keegan against Belgium in 1999, is back again in midfield.

Keown - who missed the games against Germany and Albania due to injury - is also back and appears the favourite to partner Ferdinand in defence against Greece.

Ehiogu continues his stop-start involvement in England squads under Eriksson, having now been included three times and omitted three times.

The 23-man squad is as follows: Seaman (Arsenal), Martyn (Leeds), Wright (Arsenal); G Neville (Man Utd), P Neville (Man Utd), Ferdinand (Leeds), Mills (Leeds), Southgate (Middlesbrough), Ehiogu (Middlesbrough), Carragher (Liverpool), Keown (Arsenal), Ashley Cole (Arsenal); Beckham (Man Utd), Scholes (Man Utd), Gerrard (Liverpool), Barmby (Liverpool), McManaman (Real Madrid), Murphy (Liverpool), Sinclair (West Ham); Fowler (Liverpool), Heskey (Liverpool), Andy Cole (Man Utd), Sheringham (Tottenham).
