Police in the North are concerned that the so-called Real IRA may be developing more sophisticated technology in their continuing attacks.

In the latest incident, the dissidents used a command wire to fire a rocket-type device at a police patrol in Co Down.

In a statement the Real IRA said it was behind the attack and also promised more.

The officers escaped injury when the projectile apparently bounced off their car without exploding near Downpatrick.

The dissidents also used a mercury tilt-switch device in attacking a trainee police officer in Ballymena last month.
