Stokes not expecting another Dons thrashing

Anthony Stokes insists he is as keen to forget Celtic’s 9-0 thrashing of Aberdeen last year as the Dons themselves as the two sides prepare to meet in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League at Parkhead on Sunday.

Anthony Stokes insists he is as keen to forget Celtic’s 9-0 thrashing of Aberdeen last year as the Dons themselves as the two sides prepare to meet in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League at Parkhead on Sunday.

The corresponding fixture last season saw the Hoops striker help himself to a hat-trick against the sorry visitors who were lucky to avoid a double-figures defeat.

Stokes also scored in the following three victories over the men from the Granite City and in the 1-0 win at Pittodrie early this season.

However, the Irishman, 23, played down his record against the Dons and believes the slate is wiped clean for this weekend.

“I know I scored a hat-trick against them last year but that is about it,” he said.

“You don’t really think about that (goals against the same club).

“Last year is out the window, they obviously want to have a good campaign this year and they will come to Parkhead trying to get a result so we will have to be at our best.

“Every game is different, it is a week by week thing and it’s going to be a very tough game.

“We played them a couple of times after that result last year and the games were much tighter.

“I think one of the games at home was only 1-0 so we know what to expect, we’ve played them enough times.

“But we are at home and we will fancy our chances.”

Stokes played as Celtic’s lone striker in their 1-1 draw against Rennes in France last night where Joe Ledley’s equaliser following a calamitous own goal by Cha Du-ri kept the Hoops’ Europa League hopes alive.

The former Hibernian player believes the performances and result will boost confidence but admits he might have scored to add to the double he got in the 3-3 draw at Kilmarnock last week.

“We didn’t want to go in to the Aberdeen game after a defeat in Rennes,” he said.

“I thought we played well, we had one or two chances and I missed one or two myself.

“I should have scored in the first half, I tried to divert the ball in to the near corner but those balls are a little bit different to the Mitre ones (used in the SPL).

“I didn’t get much whip on it so I was a little bit disappointed.

“We put ourselves under pressure with the goal we gave away but we fought back well again and we are happy with the point, I suppose.”

Stokes admitted his role in Rennes was exhausting but insists he will continue to try to impress manager Neil Lennon, who has often left him out of the bigger games.

“It was a hard shift up there,” he said.

“It can be a thankless task, but to be fair the lads did well to get up to support me and I think it worked all right.

“But it’s the same this year as it was last year.

“I am just trying to do as well as I possibly can in training and in games and try to score goals.

“It was a little bit different last night, I had to try to hold the ball up more as I was up there on my own but I did as well as I could and I am happy enough with my performance.”
