Neill slams Gallas saga

Former Arsenal manager Terry Neill believes the deadline-day move for William Gallas will help the Gunners push for Premiership success – although he branded the saga “disrespectful” to football.

Gallas signed from champions Chelsea with Ashley Cole moving the other way, with both players appearing unsettled last season before the deal was completed.

With Chelsea claiming Gallas went to lengths to push through a move, and Cole criticising Arsenal in the promotional material for his book, Neill would have liked the situation handled better.

“I just think the whole thing – on both sides – is disrespectful to the game,” said Neill, who managed the Gunners from 1976 to 1983.

“Someone has got to say ‘I’m not going to get embroiled in these situations from now’ and be a bit more adult about it.

“As far as William is concerned, he’s got to say he disagrees with what Chelsea said but let’s forget the stuff about suing them.

“It’s not just about football, it involves supposedly grown-up adults – but the less you say the more impact you can have.”

Neill now co-owns a telecommunications company and was recently involved in a Hextalls charity five-a-side tournament where 10 blue-chip companies played to raise money for Shelter, who help homeless people.

The 64-year-old is still seen at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium – he remains close friends with assistant boss Pat Rice – and is confident of a successful season after Arsene Wenger’s deadline-day signings.

The former Northern Ireland defender said: “I think Arsenal have done exceptionally well – at the 11th, 12th and maybe 13th hour – with their signings.

“Getting Julio Baptista in as well and getting rid of the unsettled players - that was vital. You cannot have that unrest.

“I’m delighted that it’s worked out for them, and Gallas is just the type of player they need, and I think he will give them sterling service.”

He added: “They have a very good squad indeed and although they have not got off to the best of starts they now have a squad which will give any team in England or Europe a run for their money.

“Sir Alex Ferguson has declared his intentions with Manchester United’s good start so it’s looking very promising.”

Neill has predicted a fiery reception for Cole when the defender’s book is eventually published.

He added: “I’m sure there will be ripples when his book comes out but that is the way the game is going these days.

“There are plenty of people having a go at other people rather than having a bit of class and not lowering themselves to that level.

“Even if you were skint, would you sink that low to have a go at everybody? Everyone has the right to speak but it’s unfortunate that it is the way of the world that it’s about the more vitriolic you can be and about the people in prominent positions you can have a go at.

“I’ve always thought it’s a wise man who keeps his counsel.”
