Part of Belfast International Airport was flooded today after being hit by a freak thunderstorm.

At one stage check-ins were suspended, two flights diverted and 10 more had to delay landing at Aldergrove, Co.Antrim.

Up to 3 inches of water flooded the main domestic arrivals hall during torrential rain, thunder and lightning on one of the airport’s busiest days of the year, with an estimated 30,000 passengers departing, the majority of them for summer holidays..

Incoming flights from Bristol and Milan had to be diverted to Belfast City, and even though the runways stayed open, 10 more had to delay landing.

Check-ins were suspended for 25 minutes.

The disruption lasted for an hour and 15 minutes.
