The Supreme Court has deferred a decision on when to send disgraced TD Liam Lawlor to jail until January 2nd, sparing the former Fianna Fail member from spending Christmas behind bars.

The court said the deferral was necessary because of exceptional circumstances surrounding the case.

Earlier today, the Supreme Court rejected Mr Lawlor’s appeal against a seven-day sentence imposed by the High Court for continually refusing to comply with the Flood Tribunal.

It was the second jail term handed down to Mr Lawlor over his failure to supply details of his finances to the tribunal, despite being ordered to do so by the High Court.
