Ireland’s Polish community will be able to cheer on their national football team over the next weeks as they bid to qualify for the European Championships.
Thanks to the Health and Safety Authority, satellite channel Setanta will broadcast three matches over the next few weeks.
According to the HSA, non-Irish workers – of which Polish people are the largest group – are up to three times more likely to be killed at work.
The deal is part of the HSA’s campaign to heighten awareness and improve safety standards for foreign workers here.
Tom Beegan, HSA chief executive, said the effort was part of the organisation’s strategy to target at-risk groups.
“We have a duty to deliver the safety message where it is most effective and what better way to talk directly to the Polish community,” he said.
Coverage of the game against Kazakhstan will be shown on Setanta Sports tomorrow followed by the Portugal match on Wednesday, October 11 and Belgium on Wednesday, November 15.
It will be accompanied by a Polish translation of the HSA’s construction safety TV advertisement and a series of sting adverts encouraging viewers to seek advice and guidance from the authority.
