The European Tour and Asian Tour will have one fewer tournament this year following the removal of the co-sanctioned Singapore Masters from their 2008 schedules.
The event was due to be played at Laguna National Golf and Country Club from February 14-17.
It was listed in the calendars released by both tours late last year but quietly removed after it became apparent the tournament would not be going ahead as scheduled.
The vacant slot has been filled by another co-sanctioned event, the Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesian Open, which will be held at the Cengkareng Golf Club in Jakarta, and was brought forward from a start date of February 21.
It is unclear whether the Singapore Masters, which began in 2001, will return next year.
Tournament organisers GlobalOne were unavailable for comment on Thursday.
However, Asian Tour executive chairman Kyi Hla Han expressed hope that it will return in the near future.
“It is a disappointment that the Singapore Masters will not be on the Asian schedule for this season as it is an event that has produced a lot of Asian winners in the past like Mardan Mamat, Liang Wen-chong and Zhang Lian-wei,” said Han.
“We look forward to the return of the Singapore Masters especially at a course like Laguna National which has been very supportive of our events in the past.”
No reasons have been given for the cancellation although it is believed to be because of a lack of sponsors.
The prestige of the tournament, once the most lucrative in Singapore, has suffered in recent years following the departure of original title sponsors Caltex and the revival of the Barclays Singapore Open, which has become the Asian Tour’s flagship event this year.
The difficulty of finding new sponsors for the event has been exacerbated by the announcement of a new women’s tournament, the HSBC Women’s Champions, which will take place in early March at the nearby Tanah Merah Country Club.
