Six days after his shock retirement U-turn, Scholes was pitched into a United side lacking both Phil Jones and Chris Smalling due to injury, although Jonny Evans did make his return from a calf problem.

With Gary Cahill on his way to Chelsea, Zat Knight and David Wheater were paired together in the Bolton midfield, although it is anticipated USA defender Tim Ream will join the Trotters once a work permit has been granted.
