Spirit Of The Mist provided first-season trainer Tim Pitt with cause for celebration when making virtually all the running in the opening race at Epsom.

John Egan had the 15-2 chance smartly away in the Britaniacrest Recycling EBF Median Auction Maiden Stakes and the colt really started to assert as the field turned for home.

Although looking slightly green in the closing stages, Spirit Of The Mist was always going best of all and kept on well to beat Silca Key by a length and a quarter, while the Michael Jarvis-trained Jaasoos took the eye back in third.

“He did it well and is a nice progressive type,” said Egan. “He will make a better three-year-old and was bought as a Christmas present for the owner’s wife.”
