Water-charges: No PPS numbers to register, and charges of €100 and €60 capped to 2019

Environment Minister Alan Kelly has taken his feet in the Dáil to announce a range of measures on water charges.

"This is a significant moment for the county," he said. "We as a Government have made mistakes…We needed to listen to the people and take stock and I believe we have done that."

He said the aim was to introduce a world-class service.

Single-adult households are set to pay €160 a year in water charges, while all other households will pay €260. The charges will be capped until Jan 1, 2019.

Households will benefit from the €100 water relief allowance, bring charges down to €60 and €160 respectively.

Metered usage can reduce those figures further where people conserve water.

The Minister said: "These charges are affordable (at) €3 per week for families, among the lowest in Europe."

PPS numbers will also no longer be required for registration, and previously collected PPS numbers will be deleted by Irish Water.
