UPC worked closely with Gardaí to become only web firm to restrict child porn access
UPC says it worked closely with the Government and Gardaí in the last few months to establish a system of banning access for people trying to view child pornography.
It is the only web company out of the 28 main internet providers in the country to have signed up to a voluntary code of practice with the Gardaí restricting access to child abuse material, according to the Irish Examiner.
The Internet provider is to block customers who attempt to log on to websites containing child sexual abuse material, whether deliberately or mistakenly.
Gardaí are to provide the company with a list of Internet addresses containing child pornography.
An advisory message will be displayed on screen outlining the reasons for the restricted access, where cases arise.
CEO of UPC Magnus Ternsjo says they worked closely with the authorities here on the system.
He said: "From our own point of view we have worked very well with the gardaí on a preventative police tool that is actually already being used in other countries and is obviously defined by the national legisltaion of those countries.
"In our case we just implemented it in good close co-operation with the gardaí over the last couple of months."
