Two men have killed and two others are fighting for their lives following a crash near Cork City.

The three-car collison happened on the main Douglas-to-Carrigaline road early this morning.

At 6.30am, five people were travelling in a BMW heading towards Carrigaline when their car was in collision with another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction at Carr's Hill.

It is believed all five were eastern European and aged in their twenties.

The driver of the BMW and a rear-seat passenger - both eastern European men - were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other men in the same car are in a critical condition at Cork University Hospital, while a woman in the same car is in a stable condition.

The second car, which was driven by a man in his 40s, ended up in a field.

The driver of a third car, which had been overtaken by the BMW, hit a ditch trying to avoid the crash.

Gardaí have notified the Garda Ombudsman of the collision because the driver of the car which hit the ditch to avoid the crash is a member of the gardaí. It is understood he was returning home at the end of his shift.

Both drivers are being treated for non life-threatening injuries.

The crash is the second fatal collision in the Carrigaline area in the space of just over 24 hours. Yesterday morning, a 21-year-old man was killed when his car crashed in the Waterpark estate.

Elsewhere, a man in his 30s is in a serious condition in hospital after he was knocked down by a car on the Main Street in Naas in Co Kildare shortly after midnight.
