Taoiseach confirms civil servant met Callinan Monday night, denies he was sacked

The Taoiseach has given the clearest signal yet that Justice Minister Alan Shatter will acknowledge that Gardaí did not do enough to get the co-operation of whistleblowers.

"There wasn't enough done, and I expect Minister Shatter to deal with that when he comes to address the Garda Inspectorate report here today," he said.

Enda Kenny has also confirmed that a civil servant was sent to the former Garda Commissioner on Monday night, 12 hours before Martin Callinan decided to take early retirement.

However, Enda Kenny denied that Mr Callinan was sacked.

The Taoiseach also confirmed that Attorney General Máire Whelan would not discuss the issue of the secret recording of telephone calls over the phone, and sought a meeting in person at 6pm on Sunday.
