Taoiseach admits Budget change will hit half of private health insurance customers

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has admitted that around half of private health insurance policyholders will be affected by changes in the Budget.

Despite the Finance Minister insisting the plan to change the way tax relief is claimed on health insurance would only hit "gold plated" policies, it has since emerged that as many as 1.2 million policies could be hit.

In the Dáil, Taoiseach Enda Kenny admitted that the numbers affected are significant.

"It is the Revenue Commissioners who pay out individually, PRSI number by PRSI number," he said.

"It is they who have the accuracy of the figures here, and it is they who say that approximately 50% of people will be affected by these."
