Solicitor: Dhara death inquest would be 'hollow' if held in North

The solicitor for the family of Dhara Kivlehan says any inquest into her death in the North would be hollow, as it may not have the co-operation of the doctors involved.

The 28-year-old died at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast of multi-organ failure, a week after the birth of her first child in Sligo General Hospital in September 2010.

Yesterday at the High Court, the HSE agreed a settlement of €790,000 with her family and apologised “unreservedly” for “shortcomings” in relation to her treatment in Sligo.

The Kivlehan family are now anxiously awaiting to hear from the Attorney General if an inquest into her death will be held in Sligo or Belfast.

"If the inquest in the North of Ireland goes ahead the cooperation of doctors who were involved in Dhara's treatment is an issue," said solicitor Damian Tansey.

"If a doctor refuses to travel to the North to participate in an inquest, such an inquest would be utterly hollow."
