'Pro-life' TD '95% ready to back worthy' abortion bill

Fine Gael TD Regina Doherty has said she is 95% ready to give her support to legislation on abortion.

Fine Gael TD Regina Doherty has said she is 95% ready to give her support to legislation on abortion.

Her comments come after the Oireachtas Committee on Health last week heard the views of a number of groups on the new legislation.

The Meath East TD, who would have a "pro-life" stance, says any doubts or questions she had on the issue of suicide have now been put to rest follow the hearings.

The FG deputy said she is ready to back the new bill, describing it as a "worthy" document.

Ms Doherty said: "I started the week off wanting to be able to find a way that I could support what the Government wants to do, because the merit behind it is worthy, it is good.

"Personally, I had some issues, but by the end of the week, I am about 95% ready - and that is obviously not having seen the legislation, to support this opportunity, this movement, this initiative behind the expert report."
