The Taoiseach has today said that extra money will not be made available for college places this year, despite a surge in demand.
The CAO has reported a 10% rise in initial applications this year to more than 72,000.
It has led to fears that many will be left disappointed as points may rise and the number of places in some courses will be restricted.
Taoiseach Brian Cowen has told the Dáil that he hopes more places can be provided - but that no extra money is available.
