A 43-year-old man was arrested today by gardaí investigating the disappearance of a Sligo teenager more than 18 months ago.

Melissa Mahon, 14, vanished from her home in Rathbraughan Park in September 2006.

The man was arrested this morning in the Sligo town area and is being held under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act.

Last February, gardaí probing the disappearance discovered human remains in Lough Gill after receiving fresh information about the missing girl.

Detectives were looking at the possibility the teenager may have been murdered and her body dumped in the lough.

The remains were taken from waters near Parkes Castle, two kilometres from Sligo, removed from the scene and brought to Dublin for examination.

A garda spokeswoman could not confirm today whether the remains were those of the missing teenager and said the investigation was still ongoing.
