Major protest against water charges to start at 1pm today

Tens of thousands of people are expected to converge on Leinster House today in a major demonstration against water charges.

The protest - organised by the the Right2Water campaign is demanding that the Government scrap domestic water charges.

It comes despite a government decision to review and place a cap on the new charges.

Today's protest will start at the Merrion Square entrance to Leinster House at 1pm.

Organisers say they do not expect poor weather to deter people from attending.

The main part of the protest runs from 1pm to 4pm this afternoon. A series of smaller stages are being set up afterwards, to accommodate people who may wish to attend after work.

The Government has taken measures to limit the pressure TDs will be under today.

The Dáil sat until well after midnight last night to start approving amendments to the water charges regime, meaning it will not have to hold any debates on water today.
