Labour gives guarded response to health reform plan

The Labour Party has said that Government plans to replace health boards with four regional executives will not improve the health service unless the executives are community-based.

The Labour Party has said that Government plans to replace health boards with four regional executives will not improve the health service unless the executives are community-based.

The proposal is contained in an audit of the health service commissioned by the Department of Health, according to reports this morning.

The new executives would contain greater numbers of professionals and consumers at the expense of local politicians.

Labour spokesperson Liz McManus said: "Everybody recognises that changes are needed, but not at the price where the public services are reduced and people are further disconnected from those who deliver those services.

"I am concerned at the outlook of the Government, where their primary motivation appears to be cutbacks on finances rather than improving delivery of services to people."
