Portmagee in Co Kerry has won the inaugural National Tourism Town award.

Fáilte Ireland wanted to recognise the towns and villages which are working hardest to enhance their appeal to tourists.

Other shortlisted towns were: Ballyvaughan, Co Clare; Clonakilty, Co Cork and Dundalk, Co Louth; Ennis, Co Clare, Kilkenny, Co Kilkenny, Killarney, Co Kerry; Letterkenny, Co Donegal; Trim, Co Meath and Westport, Co Mayo.

Portmagee was awarded a €10,000 grant towards further developing itself as a tourism destination.
