Speaking following the resignation of Brian Cowen as Fianna Fáil leader today, Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny called for the immediate dissolution of the Government.
"The Taoiseach's attempt to remain as Head of Government despite losing the confidence of his own party is another sad example of Fianna Fáil putting their own survival ahead of the country's survival," Mr Kenny said in a statement.
"It is also a complete contradiction of his stated position less than a week ago.
"Brian Cowen should go immediately to Aras an Uachtaráin to seek the dissolution of the Dáil so that a general election can be held without further delay," he added.
"If he refuses to do so, Fine Gael will move a motion of no confidence in Brian Cowen as Taoiseach in the Dáil on Tuesday."
