Kenny: Abortion law will abide by X case ruling

Taoiseach Enda Kenny is insisting vowing that abortion legislation to be enacted here will be in line with the X case.

Earlier today a group of consultant osychiatrists told Oireachtas members that there was no medical basis that abortion was a treatment for suicide ideation.

Last night Mr Kenny faced criticism over the proposals from members of the Fine Gael parliamentary party.

But despite that he says the new law will include the X case ruling.

"No woman in Ireland is entitled to, by choice, have an abortion unless there is a real and substantial risk to her life, as distinct from her health," he said.

"The position will be reflected strictly within the parameters of the Constitution, the Irish law, and the X case."
