Jack and Sophie were the most popular baby names in the country last year, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office.
Jack retains the top position it held in 2007 and 2008 while this is the first time Sophie has taken the number one spot, climbing from sixth in 2008, the CSO said.
Of the 38,082 boys born in 2009, 1,061 (2.8%) were named Jack, while there were 635 Sophies among the 36,196 girls born (1.8%).
The remaining top five boys' names were Sean, Daniel, Conor and James; Ava, Emma, Sarah and Grace rounded out the list of most popular girls' names.
There were three first time entries to the top 100 for boys - Bobby, Shay and Szymon - and six newcomers to the top 100 for girls: Daisy, Emilia, Layla, Madison, Oliwia and Hollie.
