The Irish Medicines Board has said there was a 20% increase in the amount of counterfeit and illegal medicines seized last year.

The seizures were made in cooperation with the Revenue Customs Service and Gardaí.

In its review for 2013, the IMB also added 102 clinical trials were approved for Ireland, an increase of 30% on 2012.

The total number of new human medicines authorised by the board in 2013 was 752.
