The Christian Solidarity Party is holding a protest outside the Dáil this afternoon over the decision to close Ireland's embassy in the Vatican.

Organisers are accusing the Government of disguising the closure as a cost-cutting measure, which has angered Catholics around the country.

Richard Green, leader of the Christian Solidarity Party, said country wide petitions to reverse the decision are ongoing.

Mr Greene said: "This move on behalf of the Government disguised as a cost-cutting exercise, is really, we believe, idealogically driven and many Catholics across the country from all different organisations are very angry.

"Thousands of petitions are being collected and TDs of all parties have been contacted by ordinary Catholics across the country."
