A leading economist has said the Government should not hesitate to nationalise the major banks here if it is required.

A leading economist has said the Government should not hesitate to nationalise the major banks here if it is required.

Colm McCarthy, author of the so-called Bord Snip Nua Report, said the focus of the first six months of the year must be to recapitalise AIB and Bank of Ireland.

He added that bond holders "should not be exempt from taking a major hit".
