Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said that he expects amendments to the abortion legislation will be discussed as the Bill passes through the Oireachtas.
Minister Gilmore was responding to reports that a number of Fine Gael backbenchers are seeking amendments to the legislation which would limit the circumstances under which an abortion could be sought.
Yesterday, Labour TD Ciara Conway said the only acceptable amendment would be one that would bring the law in line with best medical practice.
Speaking on his way into Government Buildings this morning, the Tánaiste said he will have to wait and see what the amendments are.
"Well, it's normal that when legislation is going through the Oireachtas that members of the Oireachtas do consider amendments," he said.
"That's what a committee stage and report stage of any Bill is about, and I don't expect that this Bill will be treated any differently to any other piece of legislation."
