There is increasing speculation that Fianna Fáil could be on the brink of a leadership heave, with a challenge coming from either senior Ministers or backbenchers today.

The parliamentary party will meet at midday today and it is expected that Brian Cowen will face a showdown when a motion of no confidence is tabled.

A number of TDs are understood to be behind the move, although some senior ministers believed to be behind the heave have denied their involvement.

It has been said that Mr Cowen's explanation of his Anglo contacts in the Dáil yesterday has tipped many backbenchers over the edge.
