The FAI’s honorary treasurer, John Delaney, has defended the association’s decision to sell the exclusive rights to Ireland’s home internationals to Sky Sports.

Speaking at the FAI annual general meeting in Dublin, Mr Delaney said that to decline Sky’s €7.5m offer would have been irresponsible, considering the low level of RTE’s offer.

General secretary Brendan Menton stated in his address to the AGM that the deal was done to protect the grassroots and domestic level of the association and that RTE’s objective was to focus on the international team only, which was a conflict of objectives with that of the FAI.
