Driver who rushed dying man to hospital calls for health service response
A van driver who was forced to rush a dying man to hospital in Co Louth last week after no ambulance showed up at the scene has demanded answers from health chiefs.
Two emergency calls were made by members of the public after 52-year-old Peter Sherlock collapsed in the street in Drogheda last Thursday.
Passer-by Billy Doyle came to the aid of the patient after learning an ambulance had been dispatched from Navan in Co Meath but would take some time to show up.
He brought him to the nearby Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in the back of his own vehicle, but Mr Sherlock lost his fight for life.
Billy Doyle says this should never have happened - and that health chiefs needed to give proper answers.
"(They say) ambulance service resources are deployed on a clinical-need basis to ensure that the appropriate patient gets the appropriate response. Well, that most certainly did not happen in this case," he said.
