The Irish Cancer Society has criticised a number of publicans for openly defying the workplace smoking ban.

Several pubs in Galway and Cork have admitted they are allowing smoking in their bars because they claim a significant drop in business since the ban was introduced on March 29.

Their admissions followed a decision by the owners of Fibber Magee’s in Galway’s Eyre Square to introduce a designated smoking area.

The Irish Cancer Society said this was totally unacceptable as the smoking ban was introduced to protect workers’ health.
