Call-out charge 'could discourage people from calling fire brigade'

A Dublin Councillor says the call-out charges for fire and road accidents should be reviewed.

Today marks the third anniversary of the introduction of the charges by Dublin City Council.

It means a fee of €500 for domestic fires, chimney fires and false alarms.

If Dublin Fire Brigade is called to a road crash, the charge is €610.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Jim O'Callaghan says the amount raised from the call out charges is minimal, and he thinks it could put some people off reporting a fire.

"People would be really hesitant about calling out the fire brigade - and that's not a situation we want to happen," he said.

"Obviously people have to be very cautious and careful about whether or not they call out the fire brigade - but you don't want to have a situation where people don't call it out because they think they're going to be hit with this charge."
