Cabinet to discuss first draft of abortion legislation

The cabinet will today discuss the first draft of legislation aimed at introducing abortion in limited circumstances.

However ministers are not expected to sign off on the proposals at this morning's meeting.

The bill is designed to spell out in law for the first time when a termination can be carried out.

The law is designed to be in line with the Supreme Court X-case ruling - including allowing for an abortion where the woman is suicidal.

The health minister, however, has rejected claims that up to six doctors would have to assess is a woman is suicidal because of her pregnancy.

James Reilly will outline what the proposal is today and if it is in line with the expert group recommendation of two or three doctors making a decision.

But with the Labour party and Fine Gael at odds on this legislation, the minister may have to go back and draft another version after today's meeting.
