22,000 Irish settle in Australia in five years

More than 22,000 Irish people have settled in Australia since 2009.

Figures from the 'Settlement Report' published by the Australian Government put Irish nationals at number 11 in the list of top 25 countries that have officially migrated to Australia in the last five years.

The figures, reported in the Sunday Independent, show that 22,170 people born in Ireland have permanently settled in Australia between October 1, 2009 to September 30, 2014.

Of these, almost 17,500 are categorised as "skilled" people, while the rest - almost 5,000 - are staying for family reasons.
