Celtic face UEFA disciplinary over fan's attempt to kick PSG's Kylian Mbappe

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Celtic following the pitch invasion by a fan during the Champions League tie against Paris St Germain at Parkhead.

The supporter raced onto the pitch from the stands moments before half-time to confront Paris St Germain's Kylian Mbappe with the hosts 3-0 down to the big-spending French visitors.

The man, wearing a green jacket and blue jeans, raced towards on-loan Monaco forward Mbappe and swung a kick.

He failed to make contact, though, and after falling to the floor was quickly led away by stewards.

Celtic have been charged with a count of "field invasion" and will have their case heard by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on 19 October, a statement from the European governing body said.

On a difficult evening on the pitch for the Scottish champions, this unsavoury incident was the last thing they needed.

PSG have also been charged after their fans were accused of breaking seats at Celtic Park and will have their matter addressed at the same hearing as Celtic.

UEFA chiefs have already fined Celtic 11 times in less than six years over fan-behaviour issues ranging from pro-IRA chants to fireworks, crowd disturbances and illicit banners.

Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers has already expressed his frustration with Tuesday night's incident.

Other Hoops fans were unhappy with the disruption just before the interval and Rodgers said the Parkhead club will take its own action.

He said: "The crowd reaction said it all. It is disappointing at any ground that a supporter gets on to the pitch.

"I am sure the club will deal with that. It shouldn't be anything that we should see on a football field. The crowd in their reaction told you everything you need to know.''

Police Scotland have confirmed to Press Association Sport they made seven arrests at Celtic Park, including a 21-year-old man accused of an alleged pitch incursion and assault.

Four men are expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court later on Wednesday while reports for the other three will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
