No consultation of Northern Assembly on mox plant issue

The Northern Ireland Assembly was not consulted about the new mox reprocessing plant at Sellafield.

The Northern Ireland Assembly was not consulted about the new mox reprocessing plant at Sellafield.

Ulster Unionist Environment Minister Sam Foster has admitted that he was not consulted and DUP leader Ian Paisley is said to be furious about the lack of consultation and is demanding an explanation.

Following a two-hour debate of the Stormont Assembly a resolution was passed to call for the run down and closure of Sellafield in its entirety.

Minister Foster said that he has written to the UK government's Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett seeking assurances over security.

Ian Paisley is particularly concerned with Sellafield’s new plant as the radioactive waste will be discharged into the sea off the Co Antrim coastline - his own constituency - and he has said he will be asking some serious questions at Westminster.
