The worst kept secret in hurling was tonight confirmed. DJ Carey is back in the Kilkenny starting 15 for their semi-final tie with Tipperary on Sunday.

Carey returns for the Croke Park date in a straight swap with Charlie Carter at left corner forward.

Carter was the Cats' only All-Star winner last year but after being substituted in their 0-19 to 0-17 win over Wexford in the Leinster final he misses out.

Legend Carey hasn't played since the All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Galway last year.

He sustained serious neck and shoulder injuries in a car crash last autumn and more recently had his appendix removed.

Ironically Carey and Carter both play with club side Young Irelands. Boss Brian Cody makes no other changes to his side.

Kilkenny (SHC v Tipperary): J McGarry; M Kavanagh, N Hickey, P Larkin; R Mullally, P Barry, JJ Delaney; D Lyng, A Comerford (capt); J Hoyne, H Shefflin, B McEvoy; E Brennan, M Comerford, DJ Carey.
