The Scottish Rugby Union have confirmed that Ian McGeechan has been approached by Clive Woodward to come out of coaching retirement and join the Lions in New Zealand.

England’s World Cup-winning coach has been in contact with SRU chiefs to grant the country’s current director of rugby a temporary release from his duties.

But Murrayfield bosses have not yet made a decision about letting the former Scotland coach go.

A spokesperson said: “There is informal dialogue at the moment but no decision has been taken.”

McGeechan is the only coach to have led the Lions on three successive tours but he turned down the chance to take charge of trip to Australia three years ago.
