Galway United have apologised after posting an image of a player holding a 'Stop' sign, accompanied by the song 'Murder On The Dancefloor'.

The player in question, Ed McCarthy, was banned from driving after killing a father of two in a crash in 2020.

McCarthy was given a two-year suspended sentence and a seven-year driving ban after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of the man in November 2020.

The Instagram post showed McCarthy holding the 'Stop' as the club were promoting the new League of Ireland season, which gets underway on Friday evening.

The club have since deleted the post and have issued an apology.

In a statement, Galway United said: "Galway United wish to advise that there was no offence intended by a recent social media post issued by the club and would like to unreservedly apologise for any hurt or distress that the post may have caused."

Galway United get their season underway when they host St Patrick's Athletic on Friday night.
