A two-storey building collapsed as it was being demolished in central China, killing six workers and trapping 26 others in the rubble.

The collapse occurred yesterday afternoon in Taiyuan city and rescuers freed the 26 and recovered six bodies before ending the recovery operation today, the Xinhua News Agency reported today.

The report did not say how many workers were injured.

The news agency said scores of workers were dismantling the building when it collapsed, burying several of them. When others rushed to save the trapped workers, they too were trapped when part of an adjacent structure collapsed, Xinhua said.

Investigators were looking into the cause of the accident.

Construction safety is lax in China, especially outside main cities, and construction work is mainly done by poor migrants from the countryside.

Many of the workers at the Taiyuan site were migrants from the central province of Henan, Xinhua said.
