Glanworth is a lively land-locked heritage village, still known in sporting shouts from the GAA stands as the “Harbour”. The Vikings are said to have ventured up the River Funshion to the monastery of the “yew valley” to have a snarly-toothed prowl around for loot and women. Its 13-arch 17th-century bridge is the oldest of its type in Ireland.

With scenic moments, a church, national school, several shops, take-away and 10 pubs, we’ve found a large, characterful detached family home reached on a less heroic journey within 10km of Fermoy and half an hour of the Jack Lynch tunnel with a following wind.

One of the bigger properties in an established estate of Pairc na gCrann, with three pitched volumes, a block-paved driveway and a pleasing stately presence, Number 11 is a generous, energy-efficient house.

There’s four well-sized bedrooms plus a teasing, fully finished bonus room in the converted garage (4.95m x 3.19m) which could deliver a home office, teenage den or further, first-floor double.

The attic is detailed in a cut-roof, also ripe for conversion if a vast 266sq metres of roam isn’t enough.

The hall has a robust, lovely timber floor and stair and leads to the perfectly configured large kitchen/diner we all crave, with its oak Shaker units, island, integrated fridge/freezer, dishwasher, tiled splash-back, and recessed lighting.

Double patio doors open to a sheltered terrace and lawned garden. There is another door from the utility room — a handy dart out for the washing or the dog.

The sitting room contains a fireplace, two charming windows to the garden and double doors back to the kitchen (ideal domestic ergonomics for family rough-and-tumble and entertainment moments). A guest WC completes downstairs.

Upstairs are four bedrooms —three doubles and single, and a family bathroom, the master served by a private en-suite and walk in wardrobe.

The house is warmed by OFCH, and could be easily detailed for grant-aided solar thermal or PV panels to the roofs to poke an already commendable B3 BER up even higher.

The crew of agent Sherry FitzGerald O’Donovan has had considerable interest in Number 11. Don’t delay setting sail for this inland Harbour home.

VERDICT: A handsome contender with even more room to grow just 8km from Fermoy.
